The Municipal Development Partnership (MDP)
is the outcome of a partnership set up in 1991 between
African officials and the community of aid donors for the
purpose of supporting decentralization policies and local
government capacity building in Africa. MDP has five (5)
regional offices:
- the regional office for East Africa, based in Nairobi,
Kenya
- the regional
office for Southern Africa, based in HARARE, Zimbabwe
- the regional
office for West Africa, based in Cotonou, Rep. of Benin
- the regional
office for Central Africa, based in Brazzaville, Congo
(the setting up process is under way)
- the regional
office for Northern Africa based in Rabat, Morocco (the
setting up process is under way).
MDP is an association whose members are national
associations of local authorities of African countries.
MDP fulfils two
functions:
- A pole of reference and of technical and institutional
support
- A capacity to
conduct programs for the benefit of local governments and
their associations
Institutional support is essential for the organization of
the political dialogue and for the efficiency of technical
and operational proposals. This function of institutional
support stems from the MDP structure. It is transversal
for all its activities.
